Currently, the main alternatives for aluminum alloy die castings with low requirements for accuracy and appearance are sand casting and investment casting.

Sand and investment casting are methods of manufacturing metal parts by pouring molten metal into prefabricated molds. The industry has been around for thousands of years, and there are significant differences between these two methods of manufacturing metal parts. Over the years, the sand and investment die casting processes have been refined to reduce the amount of metal used.

Sand casting is known as the oldest and most widely used casting method because of its unique versatility. The molten metal is poured directly into the sand mold and then cooled to shape, without the need to apply external pressure. Many identical parts can be cast at the same time and share a single mold, and the same sand mold can be reused many times, so this method is preferred for small batches of aluminum parts. However, this method usually results in a final product with less detail or a rough surface, which usually requires subsequent grinding and polishing before it can be put into service. The advantage of sand casting over investment die casting is that the mold design can be easily changed when the product shape needs to be changed.

Compared with aluminum alloy die-casting, sand casting is simpler and faster.
